Step-by-step guides

New here? Follow a Rental from start to finish, with screenshots: the Renter guide for renting an item, and the Owner guide for listing one and getting paid.

How a Rental works

A Renter requests a Listing for a Rental Period. The Owner accepts, the Renter pays the Upfront Collection, and the two arrange the Handover in the Conversation. The Owner confirms the start Handover as they hand the item over, from the day before the Rental Period starts; if nobody has by the end of the Rental Period, the Rental is cancelled and the Renter is refunded in full. From the first day of the Rental Period, only the Owner can cancel a paid Rental. At the end, the Renter marks the item returned and the Owner has a Return Review Period to accept it or raise a Dispute, or the Owner confirms the item returned themselves, which completes the Rental straight away.

Money

The Upfront Collection is the Rental Charge. The Security Deposit is held on the Renter's card, not taken: the Renter authorizes it from the day before the Rental Period starts, and the start Handover waits for it. After a Completed Rental the hold is released and the Payout goes to the Owner, less the Platform Fee of 20% of the Rental Charge, or S$1.50 if that is more. Payouts go to the Owner's connected Payout account in Settings.

When the Owner confirms the item returned themselves, the Payout waits a day, and at least until the day after the Rental Period. If you rented the item and never received it, tell Renthings from the Rental card before then: the Payout waits for an Operator, who either sends it to the Owner or refunds your Rental Charge in full.

Connecting your Payout account

Stripe pays your Payouts, and the law requires it to check who it pays, so it asks a few questions when you connect your Payout account in Settings. Its form says "business", but you sign up as a person: you do not need a company, a UEN, or a website.

  • Business type: Individual. Choose a company only if a company owns the items you rent out.
  • Industry: the closest rental or leasing option, such as equipment or tool rental. If there is none, choose general or other services.
  • Website: if Stripe asks, enter https://renthings.sg, or the address of one of your Listings.
  • Description: if Stripe asks, something like "I rent out my own items, such as a drill, to other people through Renthings."
  • Your details: your own name, NRIC, date of birth, address and phone, and a quick photo check of your face.
  • Bank account: your own Singapore dollar account. This is where your Payouts arrive.

Stripe keeps your identity and bank details; Renthings never sees them. A new payment usually becomes available to pay out about a week after it is made, so your first Payout can take that long to arrive.

Disputes

If an item comes back damaged, late, or not at all, the Owner can propose a Return Adjustment from the Security Deposit. The Renter can accept it, or either party can ask Renthings to decide from the Rental card.

Reports and Blocks

Every Listing, member, Message, and Review has a Report link. Reports are private and an Operator looks at each one. You can block a member from a Conversation or a Rental card; they can no longer message you or request your Listings, and you stop seeing their Listings. A Rental you already have together carries on, and you can both still message about it until it is finished. Renthings also screens every Listing, Message, and Review against the Content Policy before it is published.

Your data and your account

Settings has Export my data and Delete account, and a suspended account can still log in to use them. If you cannot log in, for example because Renthings has blocked sign-in to your account, use the privacy request page: we email a link to the address on your account that lets you do either.
