Version 2026-10-07
1. Who we are and what Renthings is
Renthings is operated by Uniqode Pte. Ltd. (UEN 202611861H), a company registered in Singapore ("Renthings", "we", or "us"). These Terms are the agreement between you and Renthings. You accept them by ticking the box that says so, when you sign up or when we ask you to accept a new version. Renthings is a marketplace where members rent rarely used items from one another. An Owner offers an item as a Listing; a Renter rents it for a Rental Period.
Renthings is not a party to any Rental. The Rental is an agreement between the Owner and the Renter, on the Listing Terms the Owner set and the Renter accepted, and on what these Terms say about Rentals. Where the Listing Terms and these Terms disagree, these Terms apply. We do not own, inspect, or insure the items, and we do not guarantee their condition, safety, or availability, or that members will do what they agreed.
2. Who can use Renthings
You must be 18 or older, hold one account only, and give us accurate information and keep it up to date.
Before you can request a Rental, you must verify a Singapore mobile number with a code we send it by text message. A number can be verified on one account at a time, and it is never shown to other members. You do not need a verified number to browse, to message an Owner, or to publish a Listing.
3. Your account
Keep your login details private and tell us at once if you think someone else is using your account. You are responsible for what happens under it.
4. Listings and content
Owners must own or be entitled to rent out what they list, describe it honestly, including any fault or missing part, and set Listing Terms they will honour. Everything you write or upload must follow our Content Policy, and you must have the right to use it: do not upload other people's photos or words without their permission. We check content with automated tools and our Operators, and we may hide or remove content that breaks the rules, without notice where we think that is necessary.
What you write and upload stays yours. You give Renthings a free, non-exclusive licence to store, copy, resize, display, and send it, including to our content checks, as far as we need to run Renthings. The licence lasts while the content is on Renthings, and for Messages and Reviews it continues after you delete your account, as section 10 explains.
5. Rentals
A Renter requests a Listing for a Rental Period, and the Owner may accept the request until the end of the Rental Period's first day. If the Owner has not accepted it by then, the request is cancelled automatically. Once the Owner accepts, the Rental is confirmed when the Renter pays the Upfront Collection. If the Renter has not paid within 48 hours of the Owner accepting, or by the end of the first day of the Rental Period if that comes sooner, the Rental is cancelled automatically.
The Rental begins at the start Handover, which the Owner and Renter arrange between themselves. The Owner confirms the start Handover on Renthings as they hand the item over, from the day before the Rental Period starts. The Owner must hand over the item the Listing describes, in the condition it describes. The Renter must take reasonable care of the item, use it only as the Listing Terms allow, not lend it to anyone else without the Owner's agreement, and return it at the end of the Rental Period in the condition it was handed over in, apart from fair wear and tear. It helps to agree on the item's condition in your Conversation at each Handover, because that is what an Operator reads if there is a Dispute.
Until the Rental Period starts, either of you can cancel a confirmed Rental. From the first day of the Rental Period, only the Owner can cancel it. If the start Handover has not been confirmed by the end of the Rental Period's last day, the Rental is cancelled automatically. When a Rental is cancelled before it starts, the Renter gets the Rental Charge back in full, as section 6 explains.
When the Renter marks the item returned, a Return Review Period of 24 hours begins, during which the Owner accepts the return or raises a Dispute. From the first day of the Rental Period, the Owner can also confirm on Renthings that the item has come back. That counts as the Owner accepting the return, so there is no Return Review Period, and the Owner can no longer raise a Dispute about it. The Payout then waits for a while, so the Renter can tell us if they never received the item, as sections 6 and 7 explain. A Rental becomes a Completed Rental when the Owner accepts the return, or when the Return Review Period ends without a Dispute. Marking an item returned is not the same as a Completed Rental.
6. Money
Payments on Renthings are processed by our payment provider, Stripe Payments Singapore Pte. Ltd., which is licensed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore as a major payment institution. Card details go straight to Stripe; Renthings never sees or stores them. All amounts are in Singapore dollars.
When the Owner accepts a Rental, the Renter pays the Upfront Collection. The Upfront Collection is the Rental Charge for the Rental Period. It does not include the Security Deposit. After a Completed Rental, the Rental Charge less the Platform Fee is paid to the Owner as a Payout, through Stripe. While a Dispute is open, the Payout waits until it is settled. The Platform Fee is 20% of the Rental Charge, or S$1.50 if that is more, but never more than the Rental Charge, and it is the only charge Renthings makes. If a Rental is cancelled before it starts, the Rental Charge is refunded in full and any Deposit Hold is released.
When the Owner confirms the item returned themselves, the Payout waits until 24 hours after they did so, or until the start of the day after the Rental Period, whichever is later. That gives the Renter time to tell us if they never received the item, which they can do from the Rental on Renthings until the Payout goes. If they do, the Payout waits until an Operator decides, as section 7 explains. We may also hold a Payout to an Owner whose account is suspended, or whose sign-in is blocked, until an Operator has reviewed it.
The Security Deposit is never taken from the Renter unless a Dispute claims it. Before the start Handover, the Renter places a Deposit Hold on their card, which reserves the amount of the Security Deposit against the card's available credit without charging it, and the Rental cannot start until it is in place. The Deposit Hold can be placed from the day before the Rental Period starts, not earlier, so that it lasts until the Rental can be settled. A card authorisation of this kind expires by itself after about a week, so a Rental that carries a Security Deposit can run for at most four days. By placing a Deposit Hold, the Renter authorises Renthings to have Stripe charge from it the amount an Owner claims in a Dispute, as section 7 explains.
When the Rental ends, the Deposit Hold is released and the reserved amount returns to the Renter's available credit. This is a release, not a refund: no money was ever taken. If a Dispute claims part of the Security Deposit, that amount is captured from the Deposit Hold and everything it does not claim is released. Any part of a captured claim that is not awarded to the Owner is refunded to the Renter.
Owners receive Payouts into a Payout account with Stripe, which they set up from Settings. Stripe verifies the Owner's identity and holds their bank details; Renthings does not collect or store them. A Payout waits until Stripe says the Payout account can receive it. Renthings can see the Payout account's status, its balance, and what Stripe still needs from you, and uses them only to send your Payouts and to tell you what to do next.
This paragraph applies to Owners who set up a Payout account. Payment processing services for Owners on Renthings are provided by Stripe and are subject to the Stripe Connected Account Agreement, which includes the Stripe Terms of Service (together, the "Stripe Services Agreement"). By agreeing to these Terms or continuing to receive Payouts on Renthings, you agree to be bound by the Stripe Services Agreement, as Stripe may change it from time to time. As a condition of Renthings enabling payment processing services through Stripe, you agree to give Renthings accurate and complete information about you, and you authorise Renthings to share it, and information about the transactions related to your use of Stripe's payment processing services, with Stripe. Stripe handles that information under the Stripe Privacy Policy. You are responsible for any tax on what you earn through Renthings.
7. Disputes and Return Adjustments
If an item comes back damaged, late, or incomplete, the Owner may raise a Dispute during the Return Review Period. If it is not returned at all, the Owner may raise one from the day after the Rental Period ends. In the Dispute the Owner proposes a Return Adjustment, which is money claimed from the Security Deposit, and that amount is captured from the Deposit Hold straight away. The Renter may accept it. If the two of you cannot agree, either of you may ask Renthings to decide. An Operator will review the Conversation, the Listing, and the proposal, and decide a Return Adjustment between zero and the amount the Owner proposed. That decision is final within Renthings. However it is settled, the Return Adjustment goes to the Owner in full, and we take no Platform Fee on it.
If the Owner confirmed an item returned that the Renter says they never received, the Renter can tell us so from the Rental before its Payout goes, with a short note that only we read. The Payout then waits, and the Owner is told that it does. An Operator will review the Conversation and the Rental and decide: either the Payout goes to the Owner, or the Renter gets the Rental Charge back in full and there is no Payout. That decision is final within Renthings. Once the Payout has gone, the Renter can still Report the Owner to us, and keeps the rights described below.
A Return Adjustment can never be more than the Security Deposit, and if the card refuses the charge, an Operator can award only what Stripe actually collected. Renthings does not insure items or pay claims between members, so a loss above that, for example an item worth more than its Security Deposit that is never returned, is for the Owner to claim from the Renter. Nothing in these Terms takes away the rights you have against each other under Singapore law, such as the terms the Supply of Goods Act 1982 implies into a hire of goods. Either of you can take a claim to the Singapore courts, including the Small Claims Tribunals for a claim within their limits. If you need the records we hold about your Rental for such a claim, ask us, and we will give you what the law allows.
8. Conduct, Reports, Blocks, and Suspension
Do not harass anyone, send spam, ask to pay or arrange outside Renthings, or use Renthings for anything illegal. Use another member's phone number, address, or other personal details only to arrange your Rental, and do not share them. Do not try to get around our checks or limits, or collect data from Renthings by automated means such as scraping. Any member can Report a Listing, member, Message, or Review, and can Block another member. A Block stops the two members messaging each other and requesting each other's Listings, but a Rental they already have together carries on, and so do Messages about it until it is finished.
We may suspend an account that breaks these Terms, the Content Policy, or the law. A suspended account's Listings are hidden, and it cannot request or accept Rentals, leave Reviews, or send Messages other than about a Rental already in progress. When an Operator suspends your account, we email you the reason. You can still log in to finish any Rental already in progress, and to get a copy of your data or delete your account. For severe abuse, we may also block sign-in to a suspended account: it is logged out on every device and cannot log in until we lift the block, and the Suspension stays until we lift it separately. We email you the reason for that too. If sign-in to your account is blocked and a Rental of yours is still in progress, tell us and we will help you finish it. If you think a Suspension or a blocked sign-in is a mistake, write to us and an Operator will look again.
A new account that uses the email address, mobile number, or Google account of a suspended member who deleted their account starts suspended, as our Privacy Policy explains.
9. Our responsibility to you
We run Renthings with reasonable care and skill, but we cannot promise that it will always be available or free of errors. We are not responsible for what members do, for the items, or for what happens at a Handover or during a Rental, except where our own breach of these Terms or our negligence caused the loss.
To the extent the law allows, Renthings is not liable for loss of profit, or for indirect or consequential loss. Our total liability to you for anything arising from these Terms or your use of Renthings is limited to the greater of S$100 and the total you paid or received through Renthings in the twelve months before the event that caused the claim. This limit does not apply to a Payout or refund that is due to you.
Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that Singapore law does not allow to be limited. Nothing in them takes away your rights under consumer protection law, such as the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act 2003.
If someone makes a claim against Renthings because of content you posted, or because you broke these Terms or the law, you must cover Renthings' reasonable costs of that claim, to the extent you caused it.
10. Ending your account
You can delete your account from Settings once every Rental you are part of is finished, no Payout to you and no payment on one of your Rentals is still being settled, and your Payout account at Stripe holds no money on its way to you. If you cannot log in, for example because sign-in to your account is blocked, you can delete it, or get a copy of your data, from renthings.sg/privacy-request: we email a link to the address on your account.
If nobody signs in to your account for three years, we email you that we will delete it, and we delete it 30 days later unless you sign in. We delete it just as if you had deleted it yourself, and never while a Rental, a payment, or a Payout of yours is unfinished.
Deleting your account removes your name and contact details, releases your mobile number and Google sign-in, and closes your Payout account at Stripe. We keep Rental and payment records for as long as our Privacy Policy explains. Messages stay where the members you exchanged them with can still see them, under "Deleted member", for as long as our Privacy Policy explains, and so do Reviews, until the record of the Rental they are about is deleted. If your account is suspended when you delete it, we keep the fingerprints the Privacy Policy describes, so that deleting is not a way around the Suspension.
If we ever decide to close Renthings, we will tell you at least 30 days before, stop taking new Rental requests, and let every confirmed Rental finish and every Payout and refund go out.
11. Changes to these Terms
We may change these Terms. We will tell you in the app, and by email if you have email notifications on, and ask you to accept the new version the next time you open Renthings. A new version applies to you only once you accept it. Until you do, you can still read these Terms and our Privacy Policy, export your data, delete your account, or log out. You can also finish any Rental already in progress, under the Terms it started with: pay for it, hand the item over and back, mark it returned, accept or dispute the return, and send Messages about it. You cannot start anything new until you accept, such as requesting or accepting a Rental, creating a Listing, messaging about a Listing, or leaving a Review.
12. Governing law and disputes with Renthings
These Terms, and every Rental made on Renthings, are governed by the laws of Singapore. If you have a complaint about Renthings, write to us first, and we will try to settle it with you. If we cannot settle it within 30 days, either of us may suggest mediation, and we will both consider it in good faith before going to court. Any dispute between you and Renthings that is not settled this way is decided by the Singapore courts, including the Small Claims Tribunals for a claim within their limits. Disputes between an Owner and a Renter about a Rental are covered in section 7.
13. General
These Terms and the Content Policy are the whole agreement between you and Renthings about using Renthings. If a court decides that part of them cannot be enforced, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later. We may transfer our rights and duties under these Terms to an organisation that takes over Renthings, and we will tell you if we do; your rights under them stay the same, and you may not transfer yours. Only you and Renthings can enforce these Terms: nobody else has a right to enforce them under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 2001. We are not responsible for a delay or failure caused by something outside our reasonable control, such as an outage at one of our providers, and we will do what we reasonably can to limit its effect. What these Terms say about Disputes, our responsibility to you, what stays after you delete your account, and governing law still applies after your account ends.
